  • Why do I have to provide my SIN?
    Due to how we are funded, we are required to ask for your Social Insurance Number. Our funders use this information to better understand how programs like ours help the people that participate in them and to see the demographic information of those that participate in LBS programs. Once the SIN is entered into the Case Management System, it is made anonymous. There is no way to see or change the SIN. All information collected is private (please see our response on keeping your information confidential below).
  • Are there any fees associated with participating in the programs?
    All programs that fall under the LBS guidelines are free. LBS organizations are funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario. *Where programming is offered that includes a fee, we will always provide that information clearly to prospective learners.
  • Who can sign up for classes?
    To be eligible for services with us, you must be: An Ontario Resident At least 18 years of age (on an exception basis, we can provide services to 16-17 year olds) Have a valid SIN Be sufficiently proficient in English or French to benefit from instruction. Assess below the end of Level 3 of the OALCF on the intake assessment.
  • Can you assist with job search, resume writing, or career guidance?
    We do not provide these services to our learners. These are services that are provided by our employment services community partners: · Employment Options in Elliot Lake located at 40 Prince Edward Walk · Employment Solutions in Blind River located at 1 Industrial Park Road, Suite 205
  • What is a Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program?
    LBS programs help learners develop and apply communication, numeracy and digital skills to achieve their learning goals. This is done using the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF) and encompasses six (6) competencies: Find and Use Information Communicate Ideas and Information Understand and Use Numbers Use Digital Technology Manage Learning Engage with Others Learners’ complete activities and milestones to show their progress through their learning plans to achieve their learning goals.

  • Are there any parking facilities available for participants?
    In Blind River, there is street parking available for learners. In Elliot Lake, there is a shared parking lot for Paris Plaza that is available.
  • Are they accessible by public transportation?
    Public transportation is available at our Elliot Lake location.
  • What are your office hours, and do I need to make an appointment?
    Our office hours are Monday to Thursday from 8:30am to 5:00pm. We are closed from 12:00pm to 1:00pm for lunch. Our training hours are Monday to Thursday from 8:30am to 3:00pm. *Please see above reference to accommodating flexible training hours.
  • How many LBS sites do you have? Where are they located?
    We have three (3) LBS sites. We have a French and English site located at 10 Paris Drive, Unit 1, in Elliot Lake, and an English site located at 6 Michigan Ave in Blind River.
  • How do I know which one to choose?
    Learners should attend the site that is closest to them.
  • Can I register online, or do I need to visit your office in person?
    At this time, we do not have the ability to register learners online. Please call to book an intake appointment with us.
  • How do I enroll in a program, and what is the registration process?
    To enroll please call to book an intake appointment. See our contact information below or on the contact information page of the website. During the intake appointment we will do a short interview and complete the registration form where we collect some basic information from you (ex. name, date of birth, address, SIN). All information collected is private (please see our response on keeping your information confidential below). After the registration form is completed, you will be asked to complete a short learning assessment. This allows us to personalize your training plan to provide training at your skill level.
  • What if I assess past the end of Level 3 of the OALCF on my assessment?
    If you assess past the end of Level 3 on your assessment we will work with you to get you to the most appropriate learning environment.
  • Why do I have to do an assessment?
    The short assessment evaluates your reading, writing and numeracy skills. We also use a computer assessment for digital courses. All learners complete this assessment so that we can provide training at your skill level, and to have a starting point to show the progress you make towards your learning goals.
  • How long is the intake appointment?
    This depends on the learner, but usually this appointment only takes about 60-90 minutes.
  • Will there be homework?
    Yes. To ensure that learners are progressing towards their learning goals, they will be asked to complete work when they are not in class with us. The workload will be manageable and is used build your knowledge and skills.
  • Can I visit your office in person to discuss my specific needs or questions?
    Yes, you can drop into our offices, however depending on the day and time we may be busy with other learners. We do our best to accommodate you in these instances. If you call ahead with questions or to book an information session with us, we are better able to serve you and devote the time to you and your questions.
  • What types of programs do you offer?
    We offer a wide variety of courses, some of which include; Beginner and Intermediate Computers, Point of Sale, Microsoft Office programs, Upgrading, and Employment Readiness training. Please see our courses page for more information.
  • Do you provide individualized tutoring or one-on-one support for participants?
    Ideally we provide training in a classroom setting with multiple learners, but one on one support is available. We work with all learners to accommodate their learning needs and styles.
  • How long do the programs typically last, and what are the class schedules?
    The length of time a learner is in our program varies depending on their pace of learning, the class and their learning goal. You can expect to commit to 1 to 1.5 hours per week for 4 to 6 weeks or longer depending on the training you are participating in.
  • What are your training hours?
    We provide training to learners Monday through Thursday from 8:30am to 3:00pm.
  • Can you accommodate requests for flexible training hours?
    Yes. We work with each of our learners to provide accommodations for flexible training hours as requested.
  • Is there a waitlist for classes?
    Classes are scheduled based on our instructor’s availability. Often classes begin within a week of the intake appointment. We only waitlist when we do not have the capacity to take on new learners.
  • Are there resources or accommodations available for participants with special needs?
    We have access to some resources for participants with special needs. We will work with learners who require accommodations to provide them resources. This is done on a case by case basis.
  • How is training offered?
    Training is offered in person, online or a combination of both. In person training is completed in a classroom setting with multiple learners, but one on one sessions may also be provided.
  • What can I expect my first day of class?
    Your first class will be scheduled after your intake appointment. Normally you begin classes within a week of your intake appointment. The first day of class your instructor will go over what you will learn with us and answer any questions you might have. You will also be asked to sign your learning plan.
  • What can I expect during my training with you?
    You will begin classes approximately a week after your intake appointment. During your training with us, our instructors will guide you through the training material, answering questions you might have. You will participate in hands on activities, providing you with practical experience and skill building opportunities. Written activities and milestones will be provided at appropriate times during your training to assess your progress towards your learning goals.
  • What security measures are in place to protect participant data?
    All learner files are kept in locked cabinets in locked offices. Access to these files is only for those that require the access. Team members do not discuss learners in public spaces within the office or outside of the office.
  • Will my personal information be shared with third parties?
    We share registration information with the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development in accordance with legislation. The registration form has a section called Notice of Collection and Consent which provides detailed information on how we collect and use information.
  • How do you handle the privacy and confidentiality of participant information?
    We collect and use personal information in accordance with all legislation. All team members take training on the Personal Information Protection and Electronics Documents Act (PIPEDA) to ensure we are following legislation. All information within learner files are kept confidential, and only the team members who need to review the file have access to the file.
  • Do you share any other information with third parties?
    We can share information with referral agencies such as OW, ODSP, Employment Options and Employment Solutions. Before we share any information to these partners, we have you sign a consent to share information.
  • Can I make a donation to support your programs?
    Yes. We are a registered charity and accept donations through our website. Funds donated through our website are overseen by a public foundation that provides a safe and trusted method to donate to Canadian charities. You can also drop off or mail a cheque to provide donations, although through our website is the preferred method.
  • How can I get involved as a volunteer with your organization?
    If you would like to volunteer with NCLC, you can do this through our website or pick up an application form onsite. We do complete interviews and reference checks for our volunteers, and you will be expected to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters check (there is no cost for this).
  • What types of volunteer roles are available, and what are the requirements?
    We are currently looking for volunteers to assist our instructors in class, office work, social media and marketing.
